Astons (Tampines)

I went to try out this place, upon recommendation from a friend, that the CharGrilled Chicken is nice.

Having tried once, i did find the chicken meat to be tender and the overall taste as good (perhaps i would give it a score of 4/5). However i have 2 other friends which find it as good as me and 2 others who find it average.

I went back to the place, and this time, i tried chargrilled fish with herbs. The fish melts in the mouth but is a disappointment (maybe just a score of 2.5/5). The sauce smells like mushroom soup and the serving size is small for guys. It seems just like any other western food stalls in food courts except that it costs more at $6.50. A friend tried the grilled salmon fillet, and was told that medium rare is the best. But I find the salmon to be a little fishy and burnt. I think that dish of $12.50 is even more disappointing (maybe just a score of 2/5).

As for the side dishes, I remember the french fries as nicely fried.

The potato salad tasted similar to Kenny Rogers (which is 1 of my favourite side dishes) but it looked more yellowish.

There are 2 kinds of salad under the cold side dishes i think, but they are not to my taste.

I thought the onion rings is miserably small size, with about 5-6 of them as 1 side dish. I did not try them as i think they are "over" deep fried.

I think there is a roasted vege side dish, baked potato and the mash potato which is not bad.

I did not really fancy the BBQ beans, but those who like BBQ sauce can try it out.

I think they also offer corn on the cob, it is a pity that they do not help to "slice" the corn into bits for convenient eating :p

Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie (Raffles City Shopping Centre)

I went to this restuarant twice and I think I will visit it again despite me being disappointed in some dishes.

The first time I went, I was late with my dinner appointment due to unforeseen OT work. My friends ordered the chicken stew for me.

Provencal Chicken Stew
With leek, carrot, button mushrooms, onion, perfumed with Provençal herbs. $12.50
- I wonder if I was terribly hungry or the food was good, I like the chicken stew which is served with either bread or pasta. And so... I suggested to another friend to try out this place again.

The second time I went, my friend and I decided to try the following.

Cream of Broccoli
Garnished with aioli. $8.50
- We like the soup, though we find it a little pricey.

Coq au Vin
Traditional French-style stewed chicken in red wine. $15.50
- I remember a friend recommended this dish but I think I prefer the Provencal Chicken Stew. The chicken is tender but the taste of red wine was not apparent to me.

Seafood Baked Rice (forgot actual name)
Mussels, scallops, squids, prawns cooked in white wine sauce $17.00
- The baked rice is equally disappointing as I did not find it different from baked rice served in other restuarants.

Le Royale
Chocolate mousse 66% layered with hazelnut feullitine, almond success and chocolate genoise with rum. $7.00
- We asked the waitress for recommendations and she suggested this cake, along with Jupiter (it was our first choice but it was already sold out), cheesecake and strawberry shortcake. I am not a fan of chocolate so this cake did not really attract me.

L'amour
Rose petal ice cream with raspberry swirl, rose meringue and lychee pieces. $8.00
- We are glad to have chosen this as we find the taste refreshing. It is not too sweet and yet has the fragrance of rose and sweetness of raspberry. However we had a little shock when they served the ice cream. We thought the serving size is a cup, as shown in the menu. But it turned out to be a big scoop of ice cream on a plate. The serving size might be a little too big if you are a small eater. We noticed that ladies in other tables did not finish their ice cream.

In summary, I find the prices to be a little steep for all the dishes. But I will still consider this restuarant the next time I want to indulge myself again, in desserts most probably :)
