2009/2/15 Astons (Tampines)I went to try out this place, upon recommendation from a friend, that the CharGrilled Chicken is nice.
Having tried once, i did find the chicken meat to be tender and the overall taste as good (perhaps i would give it a score of 4/5). However i have 2 other friends which find it as good as me and 2 others who find it average.
I went back to the place, and this time, i tried chargrilled fish with herbs. The fish melts in the mouth but is a disappointment (maybe just a score of 2.5/5). The sauce smells like mushroom soup and the serving size is small for guys. It seems just like any other western food stalls in food courts except that it costs more at $6.50. A friend tried the grilled salmon fillet, and was told that medium rare is the best. But I find the salmon to be a little fishy and burnt. I think that dish of $12.50 is even more disappointing (maybe just a score of 2/5).
As for the side dishes, I remember the french fries as nicely fried.
The potato salad tasted similar to Kenny Rogers (which is 1 of my favourite side dishes) but it looked more yellowish.
There are 2 kinds of salad under the cold side dishes i think, but they are not to my taste.
I thought the onion rings is miserably small size, with about 5-6 of them as 1 side dish. I did not try them as i think they are "over" deep fried.
I think there is a roasted vege side dish, baked potato and the mash potato which is not bad.
I did not really fancy the BBQ beans, but those who like BBQ sauce can try it out.
I think they also offer corn on the cob, it is a pity that they do not help to "slice" the corn into bits for convenient eating :p

This is a very nice song, suitable for KTV hehe
Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie (Raffles City Shopping Centre)
The first time I went, I was late with my dinner appointment due to unforeseen OT work. My friends ordered the chicken stew for me. Provencal Chicken Stew
Cream of Broccoli Coq au Vin Seafood Baked Rice (forgot actual name) Le Royale L'amour In summary, I find the prices to be a little steep for all the dishes. But I will still consider this restuarant the next time I want to indulge myself again, in desserts most probably :)
2009/1/3 Organic Cafe Experience (Century Square)I have went to this organic cafe 2 times, 1 for dinner and 1 for the afternoon tea.
i forgot where it is in orchard but the one i went is the Tampines branch.
i did not try e xmas set, it seems worth it as it has appetizer, soup, main course served with coffee / tea and a dessert. i think the price is $25++.
i had the olio alio which is $13++ and it is more worth than the usual set you would get in other restuarants cos this cafe serves it with seafood - 3 prawns, 3 mussels, 2 "scallops". My friend had the grilled fish served with some berry sauce - I don't exactly remember the details. It has a nice taste in first few bites but I bet I would get sick of the taste if I were to finish the whole dish.
i m not exactly selling this place for organic food (cos i cant tell e difference btw organic and non organic :p) but i tink the price is ok for a main course (though desserts seem expensive and has limited variety).
The afternoon set is $7++ for coffee/tea and limited dessert choices (eg tiramisu with ice cream). I tot it is quite worth it so i went. Turned out the tiramisu size is smaller (this is not surprising for me though i was hoping for a bigger piece haha) and I thought the tiramisu I had during dinner time has a stronger taste. The warm waffle served with fruits (strawberry and kiwi) and vanilla ice cream tasted better in the afternoon set.
2008/12/21 Peach Blossoms (Marina Mandarin)We reached the restaurant before 12 noon. The atmosphere is quiet and soothing until other tables are filled up with chatty adults and rowdy children :p We ordered quite a number of dishes (though we did not manage to try all). I forgot the name of the Soup of the day but the soup is very sweet and the base has sweet corn, dates, pork etc. The warm feeling flows down to the stomach, as if warming it up for a sumptous meal. The Steamed BBQ Pork Bun & Char Sao Su is good. The Dum Sum items can be served by quantity. If you want to try all the items, you may want to order only 1 piece per dish item for yourself. I love the Deep Fried Homemade Beancurd with Oats and Chilli Padi, though the Oats tasted similar to what you would get in coffee shops as well. The Carrot Cake with Pork Floss is not bad. The Pan Fried Cheong Fun in XO Chilli Sauce is not bad as well though I think the cheong fun has too many layers. The 3 items mentioned above are served in dishes, instead of pieces. We also tried the following dishes, though they did not leave much impression on me. I would have preferred Ding Tai Feng's Xiao Long Bao and Crystal Jade's Banana and Red Bean Paste Roll. Each guest can only ordered 1 dessert and we decided to try the following. Both tasted good to me! We left the restaurant feeling satisfied though that bill also left a little hole in the pocket. I don't think we have eaten enough as the bill comes to $80 haha. After considering the delicate service given by the waitress, and We were given 2.5 hours of complimentary parking and a delicious cake (as it was my birthday celebration), I think I do enjoyed the most expensive lunch* in my life. * excluding wedding lunch reception hahaha Metta (Simei)After trying out a real vegetarian meal in HK, I thought of trying out a vegetarian meal one day. We ordered . I think the rice and soup is free flow for eat-in. They also offer takeaway. Besides being tasty, vegetarian meals do not make me bloated. Hence I will go to this place for meals again, and try out other vegetarian restaurants. Breko Cafe (Bugis)This restuarant first came to my mind when I attempt to think of sauteed mushrooms. I am not sure if the menu or my tastebuds have changed. But the sauteed mushrooms is not appealing to me now :P
We also ordered the caesar salad, calamari, and fish and chips. The caesar salad has avocado. But I preferred MOF's avocado tofu salad with wasabi cream. Somehow I tasted a tinge of weird smell that comes with the calamari, usually the smell comes from beef, mutton etc. The sweet and sour chilli sauce is not bad, similar to Pasta Cafe, Wisma Atria who served my favourite calamari in Singapore. Fortune Restaurant (Toa Payoh)We went on a Saturday and the kitchen is almost ready to close the dim sum menu. Luckily we are in time for the last order. We manage to try a few items, mostly fried ones. I was a fan of Yum Cha restaurant, Chinatown and I remember how the dim sum appeals to me even after a few visits. Comparatively, the Fortune dim sum did not appeal much to me, though the waitresses are more friendly. Chin Huat Steamboat (Novena)I did not get to try this restaurant but I like to comment on the crowd I have seen!
I first heard of this brand through television commercials. Lately there is a variety show on buffet and another branch of this restuarant is being introduced for its steamboat buffet. This restaurant is just opposite Novena Square.
I heard the price is less than $20 and there is fondue, sushi & bbq on top of normal steamboat menu. The price seems worth it but sad to say, I did not get to try this restuarant haha. We reached there at 6pm on a Saturday night and the restuarant is already full with a queue outside of at least 30 people. This queue has a mixture of old people and young children and I half admire their patience, and half amazed at their tolerance.
We settled down for the chicken rice stall next door and finished our dinner after 1 hour. The queue remains. After shopping at nearby shopping malls, we walked back for our car and the queue is still around, this time with perhaps less people at 9pm. Jack's place (Parkway Parade)
I ordered cod fish fillet with baked potato. The vegetables were well steamed as I do not like raw vegetables. I like pototoes and cod fish but that day, the dish did not appeal much to me. Perhaps it is because I would prefer the food to be served warmer. Though we need a while to grab a waiter's attention for food ordering, they were pretty quick to refill our hot water. I think the executive set lunch might be a better deal. 五月天 - 我又初恋了**

My friend and i ordered the following to share :
- a ramen with tempura set
- some sticks of chuan4 sao1 (opps forgot what they are called in english / japanese haha)
- soft shell crab
- a dessert with red bean and tang yuan / mochi like dumplings haha
- cheesecake
The ramen is okay for the price.
The sticks are nice, my friend chose 3 kinds, 1 is scallop, 1 is prawn with bacon, 1 is the asparagus with bacon. The bacon choices are special.
The soft shell crab is fishy - well i am particular about fishy smell.
The dessert is not bad with some finely crushed ice at bottom of the red bean. I am not into cheesecake as the taste is strong for me. Seafood Harvest (Bugis Junction) I knew there was a restaurant called Seafood Harvest in Bugis Junction level 2. But I have never tried it before as I find the prices to be steep for a dinner. Today I went looking around for set lunches and decided to take a peek at what Seafood Harvest can offer. Then did I realise that it is a restaurant under Jacks' Place and the set lunch concept is similar. I ordered a set lunch at $9.90++ with the main course "grilled fillet fish". The fish is very tender but I do not like it melting in my mouth, as it felt like there is nothing to bite at all. The side vegetables are very sweet. The set lunch comes with a seafood soup, coffee / tea and dessert. The seafood soup is bland and the only trace of seafood I can find is crabsticks (which is not real seafood :p). The dessert is a piece of chocolate cake. Luckily it was small as I find it too sweet. I also ordered one of my favourite side dishes escargot ($9 for half a dozen). It tasted good with garlic and butter, but then, escargot tasted the same to me (when served with garlic and butter) hence I am unable to decide which restaurant serves better. The only other escargot dish which I liked was served, from Moonfish, (de-shelled) on top of mushrooms. There is something which I do not like about the service. The speed of food serving is kinda fast. Before the soup and garlic bread is finished, they have served the escargot. In a few seconds, the main dishes are served as well. I would have prefered them to serve the main dishes only when the soup and escargot are finished. There is a waiter who did not take initiative in refilling my warm water when he served the soup and escargot (on 2 separate occasions). I assume he should have seen my empty cup :P 2008/10/26 My Bangkok trip
We did drop by MBK, World Trade Center, Siam Centre / Discovery, but my personal favourite is Platinum fashion mall. Though you can get similar and cheaper products elsewhere, i favour this shopping mall for the air conditioning and clean washrooms. I bought 2 bags, a jacket and a skirt there and these made up my main shopping items from Bangkok! My friends bought a bag each. I am not into shopping for clothes in this mall as there are no changing rooms. I think a better shopping mall for clothes would be Pratunam City Complex? I don't remember from my bangkok trip 2 years ago :p We also spent a day going to Grand Palace and Wat Pho. We hail a cab via hotel porters but the cab driver kept insisting that the roads were blocked and suggested to drive us to another shopping area. We refused and got down the cab. We went back to hotel and asked the reception about the road blocks. The ladies thought of possible monk ceremonies and told us to take the MRT and boat ride. Upon reaching the jetty, we did not know how to buy single trip ticket and bought the unlimited boat rides ticket at 150 baht per person (since we thought of alighting at 2 piers along the route). In the end, we did not manage to go to Temple of Dawn or other areas. Here's something to take note, i think you can purchase the single trip ticket on boat at 30 Baht per person (not sure if this is the standard rate or varies according to the distance). There are private boats available but i dun think it is enjoyable (though it is less crowded / squeezy) as it is more shaky and much much more expensive. The overall experience to Grand Palace is quite okay except that we overpaid the boat expenses (we could have save 90 Baht haha). However I do find the entrance fee of 350 Baht (300 to Grand Palace and 50 to Wat Pho) to be pretty expensive. You can consider dropping by if you like such architecture. There is a massage school inside Wat Pho but i think the charges are expensive considering it is a school? I forgot the charges but it is close to 300 Baht. We had massage 3 times at the same place - Paradise Massage, along the stretch of shops on the left hand side of Asia Hotel's main entrance. I went to this massage place 2 years ago, upon a friend's recommendation. The foot massage costs 150 Baht (promotional rate, original price 2 years ago was 200 Baht) and the traditional body massage costs 200 Baht for an hour. Besides a particular massager who seems to be less friendly and offers full 1 hour massage, we generally find the rest to be quite good. According to our agenda, it is a pity that we did not manage to go to Golden Mount, 4 face buddha and have dinner at Chinatown in the end. We did have 4 "sumptuous" meals. I like the thai restuarant (Bling) at World Trade Centre. The fried squids (175 Baht) and asparagus with prawns (135 Baht) are delicious! The mango is not as sweet and fragrant as i have tasted before in Sydney. Hence I do not give as high marks for the mango sticky rice (200 Baht). But i am glad we manage to try that dessert. We did not manage to try red ruby and the minced pork noodles on a street (which was recommended by a taxi driver). We had buffet dinner at Baiyoke Sky restaurant (68th storey) and we do not think the price is reasonable for the quality. There is a variety of food but we find the food to be so-so (even at 470 Baht after 50% discount we got cos we were staying at a "sister" hotel) . The salmon sashimi, tom yum soup and pha thai is tasty. The lime sorbet and coconut ice cream is nice. Other than that, most of the dishes tasted normal, the steamed big prawns are not fresh and sweet, the desserts are not tempting, the watermelon is over ripe, the papaya has a weird taste of insecticide, and the list goes on. We had 2 meals at the japanese restuarants and they are cheap and nice! Generally I find the jap food to be cheaper and just as good. Other meals are settled for fast food and hotel cafe due to timing issues. (And i said earlier, we are trying to relax in this trip? haha but then we did try to have 8 hours of sleep every day!) In average, the 4 sumptuous meals cost more than 300 Baht each, and the lower end meals cost 120 Baht on average. I think half the Thais I met are pretty friendly, though most of the salespersons would give a black face if you had asked about the price and then decided not to buy the good. Well, if I walked away after asking about the price, i would think that is too expensive for the quality / good i was browsing at and I was not waiting for them to call me back! In fact, i only ask for the price if i like the good, i am not the kind who falls into the trap of shopping spree, purchasing cheap goods which i did not like that much / are not useful to me. :p (at least 80% of the time haha) There is another interesting fact to share. We reach the airport early, ie before 6pm, for departure flight which is scheduled at 8.10pm. The booth / gate is supposed to open at 6.10pm but there are 3 long queues (of 10 passengers in each queue) waiting behind the booth already. (What does that tell you about 60-80% of the passengers? hahaha) Anyway the waiting time is pretty long as it is manual processing and not system processing. I think we waited for 40mins or more just to reach our turn. Perhaps Tiger Airways should consider having a dedicated queue for those who are not checking in luggage, so that this group of passengers need not wait too long! The allowed weight for cabin luggage is 7kg and checked in luggage is 15kg. I think real shoppers can easily buy things which weigh beyond 23kg! We stayed in Baiyoke Boutique hotel and the design is pretty weird as in, you need to climb about 6 steps of stairs to reach the lifts. There is something puzzling me. It is a smell of a food, which I don't know what it is. I find it pungent and it is definitely not durian. It is served in 1 of the jap resturants we went to and in the local foodcourt at top of Platinum fashion mall. Perhaps now I understand why people find durians pungent :)
2008/10/22 Are credit cards free? All I wanted was a credit card which I can use and need not pay the annual fee. It would be good if my credit card has discounts with a lot of merchants and my expenses are enough to redeem some vouchers etc. However, if I need to pay the annual fee, I don't think the discounts can balance out the annual fee so the card is not worth to get.
There is something else to take note, ie the accompanying services which you need to sign up with the free credit cards. It may be easy to cancel the credit cards with a call (even though you may need to wait for 15mins for an operator to pick up your call). But it may not be easy to cancel the chequeing / account which needs either write in or queue at the bank. The bank operator I just called told me that authentication is required hence termination via phone call is not allowed.
Some of the numbers to call are not free too.
Hence, the phrase "nothing is free in the world" is true ! :p
2008/10/5 Tips to keep you safe while having fun under the sun
The following information can help to guide us on what to look for when buying sunscreens. 1. Look out for a sunscreen which shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin whereas UVB rays cause sunburn. 2. SPF measures protection against UVB rays hence the sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 15, which means you get more protection. (The source mentions that it is 15 times longer protection, but I remember seeing from other sources that this is not true.)
3. Get sunscreens that have at least 2 plus signs ie PA++ as these indicate higher protection against UVA rays.
4. Physical sunscreens, which contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and reflect a wider range of UV rays, are a better option than chemical sunscreens, which contain ingredients like Paba (para amino benzoic acid) and work by absorbing UV rays instead. A alternative is to use a chemical sunscreen which contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
5. Apply sunscreen after makeup unless it is stated that it can be used as a makeup base. This is because some sunscreens can degrade when combined with the water content in water based foundations and moisturizers.
6. Slather on sunscreen 30mins before heading out to allow it to be fully absorbed into the skin.
7. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or immediately after you step out of the water.
8. You should have sunscreen on all the times during the day, even when indoors or driving in the car, because UVA rays can penetrate glass and windows

The information above is extracted from Nu You magazine. 2008/10/4 Cultivating Positive RelationshipsRecently I went to a short talk on Cultivating Positive Relationships. Here's some information to share. (1) The following is a generic guideline on how we can cultivate better relationships.
- Embrace diversity / differences
- Select battles wisely (be willing to make compromises) - Communicate effectively (both verbal & non verbal communications ie tone & body language matters, in fact verbal communication only takes up 7%) - Accentuate the positive (acknowledge and give credit where due) - Practise equality - Abstain from blaming - Deliver promises - Establish trust (2) There are 6 kinds of behavioral styles - which one are you? I guess, it is best not to fit into any of these styles!
Headmistress
- Demanding, domineering, 'bossy' Doormat
- Feels victimized all the time - Does everything to please everybody all the time - Does not know how to say 'no' - Does not voice out differing opinions Porcupine
- Always suspicious, defensive, ready to fight, 'paranoid' - Hypersensitive - Confrontational Backstabber
- Goes behind one's back to instigate & create disunity - Agress upfront but says the opposite to others Volcano
- Volatile, temperamental - Responds emotonally Whiner
- Complains about everything - Blames all except self - People will need to do extra to help him - Thinks negatively The talk also shared briefly on how to handle people of such traits and how to overcome it if we have such traits, but I think the information is too vague for sharing :)
